My Favorite Things (#2)

This quarter we watched many different and interesting presentations. Each one was very interesting in itself, however a few of them rose to the top making them my favorites.
  1. The Presentation on Hurrican Katrina
  2. Amber's Fire Tornado Presentation
  3. Samm's Presentation on Fossil Fuels

Amber's groups presentation on firestorms was really cool (and scary). It was something I didn't expect to see and it was executed nicely.
Samm's group presentation on Fossil Fuels was also great as they explained all about the different fossil fuels and the impacts of them on the environment. Hopefully it educated others and motivated them to conserve and cut back on emissions.
Finally the presentation on Hurricane Katrina was by far the best. It had pictures explaining the devastation, information on its impact and ways people attempted to fix it. This was a very good presentation and I enjoyed it the most.

Canyon Of The Past AKA My Trip to Canyon Lake Gorge

Stepping into Canyon Lake Gorge, is like stepping back in time. There dinosaurs traverse the gorge at their leisure, well they did at one time. However, what makes the gorge different than anywhere else on earth where dinosaurs once lived, are the constant reminders of their existence in the form of fossils, foot prints and the rock formations that encapsulated them for millions of years. Hiking through the land where dinosaurs once did is such an amazing feeling.

The landscape was as beautiful as it was interesting. Each Layer of rock exposed, showing just how mother earth looked back in the distant past. In places water cascaded down trenches which too had been for some millions of years only recently exposed to the surface by a flood. As the water flowed so did more evidence of long past creatures such as single celled organisms, snails and other ancient creatures. The landscape was beautiful, the fossils amazing, and the gorge existed in a state of silent tranquility as it is a highly preserved area that is not often explored by the general populous. Truely Canyon Lake Gorge is a monument to the beauty of nature and a shining example of why we must protect the earth.

A Fix Of Lightning

My presentation for this quarter is about nitrogen fixation, it's importance and how it relates to weather. I will explain the processes that take place during nitrogen fixation and the contributing factors of it. As well as why it is important and its impact on nature. Then I will show how lightning and other weather patterns affect this process and why it does so. This presentation will touch on elements of the nitrogen cycle however it will be explained in a manner that does not require previous knowledge.
In conclusion this project should show the audience the connections between land and weather and the entire ecosystem.

Some of my favorite things...

During the first quarter of my earth and space class we researched and created presentations on various related topics. By far my 3 favorite of all of them were Amir's presentation on Inner-space cavern which was pretty factual and entertaining and relevant as it talked about a nearby and relate-able place coupled with first hand descriptions of the caverns. My second favorite presentation was "The fault in our lines- Deep Sea Trench Edition" which was great as it talked about a more obscure topic than many of the others and tied into our lesson plan quite well as they discussed the Mariana Trench, it's plate boundary, it's location and its many sea creatures. Finally my 3rd favorite topic presentation was "The Grand Canyon" which took a new angle on an old, iconic land form. It talked about the different types of rocks found there, how long ago it formed, who discovered it and the types of organisms that live there.

Glaciers The Chilling Truth (AKA Post #1)

This grading period my presentation topic is all about Glaciers. In our presentation we ( my partner, Amber & I) will explain what a glacier is, some examples, when and where (and Why???) they form as well as the effects they can have on the environment when the move on not only land but also when they fall into a body of water like the ocean. We will also discuss how glaciers cause the formations of different land forms and give examples of such formations.
As a very special part of our presentation I will demonstrate a program I made that will show how fast glaciers move and some other cool applications of the knowledge gained from doing this presentation. We hope this presentation will inspire our audience members to think about the many ways they impact their environment and the earth in general and maybe even try to conserve and decrease their everyday environmental impact. Although this is just a school project I hope it will make an impact even if it is very small.
