My Fav Presentations

This quarter of our earth and space class we did presentations of our own topics. My favorite peer presentations were: Steven's Presentation where he compared a neutron star to Thor's hammer and their respecting weight and force. I enjoyed the enthusiasm he spoke with and the way he tied in that tidbit of pop culture. Next up is Antonio, Ines and Brian's presentation on Earth-like planets. It took a cool look at the other planets that have similar properties as earth. It was interesting to speculate about the possibility of life on other planets. Finally Erick's presentation on the theory of white holes was also really cool. I had not heard of it before, so it was good to learn more about it, the creator of the theory and a look into the specific reasons why this would occur.

Telescopes: a new view

Over the past few weeks we learned about some different kinds of telescopes. Of the ones that we learned about my favorite three have to be: the Atacama telescope, Hubble telescope, and the
Giant Magellan Telescope.

Firstly the Atacama telescope is my favorite, not only because it was my assigned telescope but it is actually really cool the way that it is actually a bunch on dishes that all work together in the Atacama Desert of Chile. This Telescope has the ability to map out inferred signals from the stars. With that being said it is a interferometer.

Next The Hubble Telescope named after Edwin Hubble, a brilliant astronomer who's theories about the galaxies were proved long after he came up with them. Although it was a pain to get into orbit, it allowed astronomers to gaze into the deeper part that no man had seen before that point, by capturing wavelengths.

Finally the Giant Magellan telescope, also located in the Atacama Desert, is a massive new telescope that will use mirrors to revive optic signals from space allowing for mapping of distant celestial bodies that were before now way to far for any other telescope to get a clear image of.

What were to happen if a black hole randomly appeared on earth? My project is on this very topic. I came to this question when I was watching an episode of the Simpson's where this exact thing happened. We all know that cartoon logic is not the most sound, so I began thinking about this and began researching it. I was surprised to find a whole subreddit and ton's of information about related topics. I really want this to be special so I will not spoil the contents of my presentation, But I will tell you this... If this were to happen you would die, probably before you even knew what was happening, because you would be ripped apart atom by atom in a matter of nano seconds. I have already said too much. But I assure you it will have analogies, math and tons of awesomeness.

Oh! The Open Space

3rd Quarter Presentations

This quarter there were many presentations given. While I enjoyed them all 3 stood out to me.
  1. Why EUROPA-ll in my business?
    By: Eva, Juli and Samm
This presentation was insightful and interesting. Not to mention the name is hilarious. I really enjoyed hearing about Europa it's surface, atmosphere and potential for life, who wouldn't like it?
  2. Moons of Uranus
By: Nadine, Ilwaad, Lisa and Waqar
I can't say that I ever thought about uranus (lol), much less its moons. That made this presentation even more interesting for me. Now I know about: Miranda, Oberon, Umbriel and Titania.
  3. Life On The Red Planet
    By: Alex, Amir and Kiran
Mars, the red planet and also my favorite planet. I love the idea of colonization of Mars, so I automagicly loved this presentation from the get-go.(Though there is nothing new under the sun when it comes to Mars or ideas of colonizing it) However I still like being reminded of the possibility of doing so one day.

NASA and The Colonization of Other Worlds

Life On Mars For our project we attempted to colonize Mars. To do this we designed modular and strong bio domes that serve as what ever is needed and are easily constructed on Mars removing the need for extra space on the ships as all the materials will be in their most condensed form. We would use a combination of 3 different power sources: Atomic, Solar and Bio energy, not only removing the need to store and deal with waste but also allowing the production of plenty of energy for our new colony. The purpose of this colony will primarily be for research and development of new technologies as well as an experiment showing the plausibility of longer term colonization on other planets.

However I do not believe this will be possible anytime soon, as we do not yet posses the ability to travel such distances nor do we have enough information and technology for this to be possible yet.

From what I have researched the only future NASA missions that have been announced so far are all satellites and space-stations no plans to travel to other planets or even back to the moon yet. However with the resurgence of interest in space travel by the private sector it may not be long till said missions are announced, however it may not be from NASA but a private company.

NASA has shown no interest in colonizing other planets so far, however that could just be under wraps but it is far more likely that they don't have any plans to do so..... yet

The Sun: A Radiant Beauty

For this quarter presentation in my Earth and Space class, my group is presenting on the Sun. More specifically about Solar Flares, Sun Spots, The Solar Cycle and how these different things impact the earth and everything living on it. It is my hope that we can clear up any misconceptions or ambiguities surrounding these subjects and to not only do that but to also explain the need for constant human research and predictions that are associated with these events and that of the solar cycle. In doing so we will explain the consequences of neglecting said events and the potentially catastrophic impact it can cause on civilization and on all life on earth.

My Favorite Things (#2)

This quarter we watched many different and interesting presentations. Each one was very interesting in itself, however a few of them rose to the top making them my favorites.
  1. The Presentation on Hurrican Katrina
  2. Amber's Fire Tornado Presentation
  3. Samm's Presentation on Fossil Fuels

Amber's groups presentation on firestorms was really cool (and scary). It was something I didn't expect to see and it was executed nicely.
Samm's group presentation on Fossil Fuels was also great as they explained all about the different fossil fuels and the impacts of them on the environment. Hopefully it educated others and motivated them to conserve and cut back on emissions.
Finally the presentation on Hurricane Katrina was by far the best. It had pictures explaining the devastation, information on its impact and ways people attempted to fix it. This was a very good presentation and I enjoyed it the most.
